Many people with type 2 diabetes require oral diabetes medications.
Oral  antidiabetics are usually applied when suitable control of
hyperglycemia cannot be achieved after about 3 months of dietary
modification and uncreased physical activity. Oral antidiabetics act
in three main ways. They either stimulate the endogenous insulin
secretion, increase the sensitivity of the body to insulin (reduce the
insulin resistance), or slow the breakdown of foods into glucose.
There are six main categories of diabetes medications. Click

(information from the FDA's Consumer Magazine).
Generic Glucophage (Metformin)
Metformin is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve
glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes. It decreases the
amount of glucose absorbed from the food and the amount of
glucose made by the liver. Metformin also increases the body's
response to insulin. Metformin is not suitable for treatment of type 1
(insulin-dependent) diabetes.
Generic Diamicron (Gliclazide)
Gliclazide belongs to the group of sulfonylurea antidiabetic agents.
It is used to treat type 2 diabetes. Sulfonylureas work by stimulating
the pancreas to release more insulin into the blood stream.
Generic Starlix (Nateglinide)
Nateglinide belongs to the oral antidiabetic agents called
meglitinides. It is indicated as a monotherapy or in combination
with other medications for management of Type 2 diabetes in
patients whose hyperglycemia cannot be adequately controlled by
diet and physical exercise. Nateglinide decreases the amount of
glucose by stimulating the endogenous insulin secretion.
Generic Actos (Pioglitazone)
Pioglitazone belongs to the oral antidiabetic agents called
thiazolidinediones. It is an oral antidiabetic agent for treatment of
type 2 diabetes as monotherapy or in combination with other
medications in people whose diabetes cannot be controlled by diet
and exercise alone. Pioglitazone reduces insulin resistance, fasting
insulin levels, and blood glucose.

Diabetes
Diabetes is a disorder of carbohydrate metabolism in which the
insulin action is diminished or absent due to altered secretion or
decreased insulin activity. The most common form of diabetes is
type 2 (non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus). About 90 percent
of people with diabetes have type 2. This type of diabetes is
associated mainly with older age, obesity, family history of diabetes,
and physical inactivity. People with type 2 diabetes are not able to
make enough insulin or could not respond normally to the insulin
produced by their bodies. When this happens, sugar builds up in the
blood (hyperglycaemia). If not treated, diabetes can lead to serious
medical problems.
