Gastrointestinal Drugs
Generics of Zantac, Prilosec, Nexium, Prevacid, and
Cytotec
There are 3 main kinds of ulcer medications. The first kind called
acid- suppressing drugs reduce the amount of stomach acid
(H2-antagonists). They work by blocking histamine, which
stimulates acid secretion. Second kind of medications block the
stomach's ability to make acid (proton pump inhibitors). Third kind of
medicines possess cytoprotective action on the stomach mucosa.
Generic Zantac (Ranitidine)
Ranitidine is in a class of drugs called H2-antagonists. It is used for
treatment and maintenance therapy of duodenal and gastric ulcer,
gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), Zollinger-Ellison
syndrome, erosive esophagitis etc. Ranitidine is also used to treat
upper gastrointestinal bleeding and to prevent stress ulcers,
stomach damage from the use of aspirin-like drugs, and aspiration
of stomach acid during anesthesia .
Generic Prilosec (Omeprazole)
Omeprazole is in a class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors.
They suppress the acid production by affecting the mechanism that
pumps the stomach acid. Omeprazole is used for ulcers treatment,
gastro- esophageal reflux disease (GERD), Zollinger-Ellison
syndrome, and is used in combination with other medications to
eliminate Helicobacter pylori infection.
Generic Nexium (Esomeprazole)
Esomeprazole is in a class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors.
It works by suppressing the acid production in the stomach and is
used mainly for treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease
(GERD). Esomeprazole is also used with other medications to
prevent stomach ulcers.
Generic Prevacid (Lansoprazole)
Lansoprazole is in a class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors.
They suppress the acid production by affecting the mechanism that
pumps the stomach acid. Lansoprazole is used for ulcers
treatment, gastro- esophageal reflux disease (GERD),
Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and is used in combination with other
medications to eliminate Helicobacter pylori infection.
Generic Cytotec (Misoprostol)
Misoprostol exerts a cytoprotective action on the stomach mucosa. It
is used to prevent ulcers in people who take nonsteroidal
antiinflammatory drugs such as aspirin, that can cause ulcers. It
protects the stomach mucosa and decreases the acid secretion.
Misoprostol is also used sometimes for ulcers treatment.
