Generics of Xenical and Acomplia
Most available weight-loss medications approved by FDA are
appetite- suppressants. Appetite-suppressant medications
promote weight loss by decreasing appetite or increasing the
feeling of being full. Phentermine and sibutramine are the most
commonly prescribed appetite-suppressants. Lipase inhibitors
such as Orlistat work by reduction of fat absorption from intestines
by blocking the enzyme lipase, which is responsible for breaking
down dietary fat.
Generic Xenical (Orlistat)
Orlistat is used with low-calorie diet and exercise for the
management of obesity. Orlistat belongs to a class of drugs called
lipase inhibitors. Unlike other weight-loss medications that act on
central nervous system to suppress appetite or to speed up
metabolism, orlistat blocks about one-third of the fat in the food
from being digested. This is achieved by blocking of the enzyme
lipases that are responsible for fat absorption.

Generic Acomplia (Rimonabant)
Rimonabant is a new weight loss medication, indicated for
management of obesity in addition to diet and exercise.
Rimonabant is a selective cannabinoid (CB1) receptor
antagonists. Cannabinoid receptors are found in the brain and in
peripheral organs (adipose tissue, the liver, gastrointestinal tract
and muscle) that are important for glucose and lipid. In addition,
rimonabant has another action, it can help people quit smoking.
When cannabinoid receptors are blocked, appetite is suppressed,
and tobacco dependence could be reduced.
Acomplia® is approved in the European Union for the treatment of
obesity as an adjunct to diet and exercise.
Acomplia® is a registered trademark of Sanofi-Aventis..

Obesity
Obesity is defined as an excessively high accumulation of body fat
or adipose tissue in relation to lean body mass. The amount of
body fat includes both the distribution of fat throughout the body and
the size of the adipose tissue deposits.
Persons are at high clinical risk when they have a BMI greater than
30. Body mass Index (BMI) describes body weight relative to height
and is strongly correlated to total body fat content.
